biblische Ortschaft östlich von Bet-El. Hier befand sich während der Frühbronzezeit II/III (2350-1950 v. Chr.) eine 11 ha große Stadt mit einem Tempel auf der Akropolis. Nach einer über tausendjährigen Siedlungslücke wurde hier um 1200 v. Chr. ein israelitisches Dorf gegründet, das um 1050 v. Chr. wieder aufgegeben wurde; danach blieb der Ort für immer unbesiedelt. Da eine kanaanäische Stadt des 2. Jahrtausends nicht gefunden wurde, muss die alttestamentliche Erzählung von der Eroberung durch Josua (Josua 8) als eine ätiologische Sage zur Erklärung der bei der Wiederbesiedlung vorgefundenen Ruinenstätte verstanden werden.
